CMS says it will restore 141 teaching positions

(By Ann Doss Helms and Steve Lyttle, ahelms@charlotteobserver.com; slyttle@charlotteobserver.com) Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials said this morning they will be able to restore 141 teaching positions for the 2010-11 academic year, because state budget cuts were not as steep as expected.

Superintendent Peter Gorman called it "a good day," and said up to 120 more callbacks could be coming, depending on decisions about the county budget.

(By Ames Alexander, aalexander@charlotteobserver.com) After Howard Pasour's third impaired driving conviction, a Gaston County judge required him to wear an ankle bracelet that tested his sweat to assure probation officials he wasn't drinking.

But in January, after just two months wearing the anklet, Pasour was allowed to remove it. Now, six months later, he's charged with causing a crash that killed 17-year-old Laura Fortenberry. Authorities say he'd been drinking.

1st female graduate at Davidson College dies in Alaska

At a news conference, Gov. Bev Perdue, Mayor Anthony Foxx and Duke Energy Chief Executive Officer Jim Rogers contrasted Charlotte with three other finalist cities by repeatedly saying it best represents a "new American city" and "the future."

With sweepstakes outlawed, vendors still plan to be players

Even before the state House and Senate finished work on a bill to ban the games, the industry was threatening a wave of lawsuits and technical changes that they said would keep them legal. And the day after Gov. Bev Perdue signed the ban into law, she gave parlor owners and operators reason to think they could fight on.

Abducted baby found OK; man, woman charged

(By Steve Lyttle, slyttle@charlotteobserver.com) A 41-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were jailed Wednesday and charged in the kidnapping of a 4-month-old boy from the parking lot of a Monroe doctor's office earlier this week.

The baby, Jalleel Xamir Howard, was found about 25 miles from where the kidnapping took place on Tuesday, police say. The infant was in good health.

Judge doubles bond for suspect in fatal DWI case

(By Joe DePriest, jdepriest@charlotteobserver.com) A Gaston County judge doubled bond to $4 million Tuesday for a man charged with second-degree murder after an SUV he was driving collided with a car, killing 17-year-old Laura Elizabeth Fortenberry.

Handcuffed, a bandage on his right arm and showing no emotion, Howard Clay Pasour, 28, of Bessemer City entered the courtroom while members of the victim's family watched from the first two rows.
